How to Make Great GIGAPIXEL Images With Your Humble Digital Camera

Size matters, at least when it comes to the resolution of digital photos. As much as I love my iPhone, its built-in 1200×1600-pixel camera just doesn’t work for serious photography. Problem is, it’s been my only camera for almost a year, ever since my previous digicam croaked during a cross-country road trip. MORE>

GigaPan Panorama Camera Review

The concept is simple and perfect, turn a pocket camera into a Gigapixel producing machine. It was developed at Carnegie Mellon University with support by GoogleCMU and the NASA/Ames Intelligent Robotics Group. The term Gigapixel became popular a few years ago in Geek photo circles when people started stitching multiple images together to create extremely high resolution images. Photographer Seeks Resolution

Weighing more than 100 pounds, Flint's camera captures images at 4 gigapixels -- a resolution high enough to photograph four football fields and capture every single blade of grass. When printed at maximum resolution, the images are as big as billboards, but render the finest detail. MORE>

Microsofts HD View

HD View is the camera for the web. Its goal is to create the best picture given (a) a source with high resolution, arbitrary dynamic range, any field of view & color gamut; (b) the user’s interaction; and (c) the display being used. Microsoft Image Composite Editor (ICE) can now stitch your images and output directly to HD View or the new platform independent HD View SL. MORE>

Breaking the Gigapixel Barrier

This page contains what I believe to be one of the highest resolution, most detailed ever created. It is the view from Bryce Point in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. It consists of 196 separate photographs taken with a 6 megapixel digital camera, and then stitched together into one seamless composite. The final image is 40,784 x 26,800 pixels in size, and contains about 1.09 billion pixels...a little more than one gigapixel. MORE>
